Color goes up: painted ceiling ideas for this year

Paint is the most flexible tool an accent ceiling has. The same beam layout can look formal, coastal or bold depending on where the color goes.
Dark field, white beams
A saturated field color, such as navy or charcoal, with white beams makes the pattern jump. It works best in rooms with good light and is a favorite in bedrooms, where it can carry down onto a matching wall.

White on white
Painting beams and field the same white lets the pattern show only as shadow. It is the quietest option and suits bright coastal rooms.
Two-tone trays
Paint the raised tray field a shade or two off the walls, or a soft blue as a nod to Southern porch ceilings, and leave the soffit and crown white.
Sheen matters
Flat or matte sheens hide small ceiling imperfections. A little more sheen inside a tray reflects cove light further.
Wallcovering in the field
Grasscloth or a subtle pattern inside coffers or a tray adds texture where paint alone would be flat.
